In the field and in the lab, the faculty, students, and staff of the UA Department of Geography conduct research across the entire discipline. We subdivide our own research efforts and academic programs into four subdisciplines. Visit each subdiscipline’s page to learn more, and to view a list of faculty currently engaged in work in that area.
- Earth system science: understanding Earth as an integrated system comprising atmospheric, hydrologic, ecological, and surface processes
- Environment and natural resources: conducting research toward improving how natural resources are protected, conserved, and used
- Environment and society: exploring issues surrounding urban, regional, and environmental planning, including social justice, environmental impacts, and economic development
- Geographic information science: developing and applying spatial modeling, remote sensing, GIS, cartography, and other geographic information techniques
