Department welcomes new faculty and staff

The University of Alabama Department of Geography welcomes five new hires this fall.  Drs. Kevin Curtin and Nicholas Magliocca join the faculty, and Dr. Johanna Engstrom, Krystal Feigle, and Jackie Hayes join the department as staff members.

Curtin comes to the department as a full professor after several years at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.  Curtin’s research emphasis is transportation geography, but his research interests extend to facilities location science, urban and environmental resource allocation, and data modelling and databse design.

Magliocca joins the department as an assistant professor after serving as an assistant research professor at The National Socio-Economic Snythesis Center in Annapolis, Md.  Magliocca’s research interests include environment and society and environment and natural resources.

Engstrom joins the department as the geospatial services manager, and completed her doctorate in geography at the University of Florida in May 2017.  She oversees the department’s map library.

Feigle joins the department as the administrative secretary.  She previously worked at the Alabama Research Institute on Aging (ARIA) from 2006 to 2017.  She started work there as an office associate before being promoted to program assistant.

Hayes is the department’s new office associate.  She previously worked as an academic program specialist at the University of South Florida’s School of Geosciences from 2014 until relocating to Tuscaloosa in 2017.
