About

The Department of Geography and the Environment at The University of Alabama fosters an exciting and synergistic environment where opportunities for discovery abound. Our teaching and research interests span the discipline and the globe.

We offer BA and BS degrees in geography and an interdisciplinary BS degree in environmental science.  We also offer multiple concentrations including minors in geography and geographic information science (GIS), and an interdisciplinary minor in environmental studies.

At the graduate level, we offer programs leading to a PhD degree and an MS degree in geography. In addition, we offer a GIS certificate program.

The department typically enrolls approximately 200 geography and environmental science majors and generally has about 40 graduate students in residence.

With a degree in geography or environmental science, you’ll have  the tools to work for respected companies, for universities, for non-profits, and in public service for local, state, or national governments, in fact the U.S. Bureau of Labor shows that the demand for these skills is expanding rapidly to meet new technological environmental and social needs.
